The Precious You
Chapter 1 - An Angel On The Way
Madras,
May 1995
The day dawned. The rays of the raising sun pierced
through the window of his room. Still, he was sleeping soundly on his bed. His
mother rushed to his room and called, ”Krishna, Wake up. It’s getting late to
your school”
After calling him more than three times, tapping his
shoulders, he flinched and murmured in half sleep, “Five more minutes maa”
“Its already 8.30 Krishna. Wake up” His mom Parvathi
insisted.
“What??! Is it 8.30?! I have to be in school at sharp
9” Krishna woke up in a hurry immediately and looked at the clock. The clock
showed the time as 8.
Krishna looked at his mom, furrowing his eyebrows and
pouted ,”Maa, You are always cheating me to wake up”
“Anyway, it is late my dear. Get ready for your
school” Parvathi smiled and left.
Krishna got down from the bed and went to bath. He has
just finished 11th standard and the school was conducting summer
special classes for the upcoming batch for the board exams. Those students
didn’t have much summer holidays like every other year.
Soon, He bathed and got ready with his higher
secondary uniform which was white shirt and grey pant with white and grey
checkered tie. His deep set coffee brown eyes, perfectly arched eyebrows,
straight bridged nose and his thin lips, everything projected him like a model.
But He had a dream of becoming a doctor and serve the society.
He had breakfast and took his backpack which was
loaded with his science stream books and his lunch box.
“Bye maa” He said and came out of his home. He kept
his backpack on the backseat of his cycle and rode his bicycle towards his
school through the busy streets of madras.
The school was almost 5 kilometers away from his home.
He had to cross many streets to reach the school. On going through one of the
such streets, his legs gradually slowed down pedaling his cycle and stopped on
seeing a beautiful young girl. She had almond shaped dark brown eyes with long
eyelashes and the midnight black long silky hair that cascaded till her waist
and a cute heart shaped face.
The girl was
holding a wounded pigeon on her hands and she was applying turmeric to its injured
foot. He didn’t know what made him to stop the cycle and adore her. Whether her
beauty or her care to the injured bird.
He looked at her with a permanent smile pasted on his
face as she was speaking something with the bird caressing it. He couldn’t hear
what she was speaking with the bird, as he was standing approximately 20 feet
away from her. But he could understand from her body language that she was
pacifying the injured pigeon.
Soon, She freed the pigeon from her hands and it flew
away. Then she kept the turmeric packet inside her bag which was loaded with
many other groceries and walked away with her bag.
Krishna wanted to run behind her and talk with her.
But he didn’t know what to talk and how to talk. He felt nervous to go behind
an unknown girl and talk with her. So, He just stood there, his eyes glued to
that girl till she disappeared from his eyes.
As soon as she disappeared from his eyes, He suddenly
thought of his school and turned to his wrist watch immediately. It was only
ten more minutes to the clock to turn 9.
“Oh shit!!” He groaned and pedaled his cycle fast
towards his school.
He reached his school at the right time. He parked his
cycle in the cycle stand of the school and walked towards his classroom.
“Hey Krishna…” His friend Saanvi’s voice reached his
ears from behind.
He turned back and smiled,” Good morning, San”
Saanvi was a free spirited, happy going, bold and fit
girl who was good in sports as well as studies and had a dream of becoming a
police officer just like her father. She was studying with Krishna from her
primary school and they became best friends and know each other very well.
“Good morning, Krishna. You are late today it seems.
You always come to the school atleast 15 minutes earlier na” Saanvi asked.
“That.. That…”
Krishna stammered.
“What happened? Any problem?” Saanvi asked worryingly.
“No No, Nothing Problem” He said reassuringly.
“Then, Why are you late today. You started to follow
me in coming to the school lately ah?” Saanvi giggled.
“No San, I just saw a girl on the way. She looked like
an angel. By looking at her, I forgot about the school and got late” Krishna
blushed.
Saanvi widened her eyes incredulously as Krishna was
always a bookworm and never talk about girls.
Suddenly she smiled mischievously and giggled,” What
Krishna!! Love at first sight ah?!”
“What??! Love?! No No, I just saw her as she was
speaking innocently with the pigeon. I just liked her caring nature. It’s just
an admiration” Krishna admitted.
“Oh Okay” She raised her eyebrows and nodded her head
teasingly.
Before Krishna could reply her, he saw their mathematics
teacher going towards their classroom.
“San, Our Maths teacher is going to our class. Let’s
go” He said in a hurry and rushed inside the classroom.
Their teacher entered the classroom behind them. Their
classroom consisted of 30 students in which 18 are boys and 12 are girls.
Krishna came to his bench which was in the middle row and sat down in the
corner near his friend Ajay. Ajay was a carefree, easygoing boy who didn’t have
any future plans but write poems in his free time.
Though Krishna was friendly with everyone in his class,
Saanvi and Ajay were his best friends. They three tease each other yet they
cared about each other and be with each other in their tough time.
The teacher started taking the attendance.
Ajay whispered in Krishna’s ears,”Why are you late
today?”
Krishna didn’t want to tell about that girl to Ajay. Because,
He knew Ajay will tease him. He was such a teaser more than Saanvi.
“That…I just woke up late today” Krishna said.
“Krishna, You have such a luxury life to wake up late.
But, Look at me. I have to wake up by 7’o clock. Then, I have to get ready,
then catch a bus, then travel in the morning crowd for about one hour to reach
the school. But, You wake up lately and coming to the school easily by bicycle”
Ajay huffed, whispering.
“But, You are travelling in bus and meeting different
people. It’s a good experience na. travelling alone in the cycle doesn’t have
the luxury of meeting different people” Krishna whispered.
“Yah, You are right. There are some beautiful girls
travelling in our bus daily. By looking at them, the time flies away. I don’t
feel tired at all. Sometimes, I will write poems too on those girls. Today too I
saw a beautiful girl in our bus. I wrote a poem on her beautiful eyes. Do you
want to hear?” Ajay whispered.
“No, Please don’t say your funny poems. My ears will
bleed then” Krishna whispered teasingly.
Ajay was offended and whispered,” Krishna, You are
teasing me today. But, I bet, one day you will beg me to write a poem for your
girlfriend to impress her” Ajay whispered.
When Ajay said the word girlfriend, Krishna’s mind
went to that girl whom he saw in the street just before 30 minutes.
It was more like an involuntary action. Her beautiful
face was flashing in his mind, hundreds of butterflies fluttering in his
stomach, his heart hammering. He was lost in his thoughts.
“Krishna…” The teacher called his name for attendance.
But He was lost in his own world and didn’t respond.
“Krishna…” The teacher called him again.
“Krishna, Answer to the mam” Ajay whispered pinching
his thigh.
“Present mam...” Krishna responded standing up.
“Physically present. Mentally absent. Isn’t?” The
teacher asked flatly while marking the attendance.
“Sorry Mam” He grinned in embarrassment.
The teacher didn’t want to scold him. It was normal
for students to go out of concentration sometimes. That too, Krishna was one of
the smart, intelligent and obedient student.
“Sit down and concentrate on the class” The teacher
said. Krishna sat down.
“What happened? You have lost your mind it seems” Ajay
whispered teasingly.
Actually, it seemed, he lost his heart, not his mind.
“Nothing, Let’s listen to the class” Krishna whispered
and diverted himself to the maths class on logarithms.
…….To be continued.
